BC PLACE WEARS ‘BLUE AND YELLOW’ FOR THE SUN RUN

Vancouver, April 18, 2013 - BC Place is wearing ‘blue and yellow’ this weekend to show support for those affected by the tragedy in Boston.

The stadium is shining a light on this weekend’s Sun Run by turning its Northern Lights display ‘blue and yellow’. The display shows support for those affected by this week’s bombings at the Boston marathon. It also helps celebrate the lead up to the annual race day, with BC Place being a sponsor and host venue for the event.

BC Place General Manager, Howard Crosley, said: “We have worked closely with our partners to ensure that we host a safe and enjoyable event this weekend. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone and sharing their experience as they cross the finish line. We hope to see as many runners as possible in blue and yellow.”

The 36-foot tall Northern Lights display at BC Place will be illuminated ‘blue and yellow’ from Thursday evening (April 18) to Sunday (April 21).

FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ match schedule unveiled

The official match schedule for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ was provisionally approved today by the FIFA Executive Committee during a meeting held in Zurich.

Fans can now mark their 2015 calendars with the world’s largest women’s football tournament, which will dominate the Canadian landscape from 6 June until 5 July 2015.

The competition will kick off with the opening ceremony and opening matches in Edmonton. In total, 52 matches will be played over 30 days from coast to coast in six venues. The final match will be played in Vancouver.

Canada, as the hosts, have been named as the A1 seeds, which means that they will play their first two group matches in Edmonton.

For the first time, the 2015 tournament will welcome 24 teams from around the world, a milestone in women’s football as the beautiful game continues to grow in all regions of the globe.

The qualification matches will begin in April 2013 with the preliminary round in Europe and will continue until November 2014, ending with the play-off matches between the fourth-placed team from CONCACAF (North, Central America and the Caribbean) and the third-placed team from CONMEBOL (South America).

Canada 2015 will see the participation of five teams from the AFC, three teams from CAF, three or four teams from CONCACAF (not counting the Canadian hosts), two or three teams from CONMEBOL, eight teams from UEFA, and one team from OFC.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has also announced that the highly sought-after tickets will go on sale in the third quarter of 2014.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The official match schedule and host cities for Canada 2014 will be announced in the coming months and ticket sales will begin in August 2013.

VANCOUVER (March 12, 2013) BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo) and the BCGEU Local 1703 have ratified a three-year agreement.

The agreement includes zero per cent increase in the first year of the agreement, consistent with the Net Zero Mandate followed by modest wage increases of two percent per year, effective June 2013 and June 2014.  Wage increases will be funded through savings found within existing budgets, as required under the 2012 Cooperative Gains Mandate.
    
PavCo employs 35 full-time employees, approximately 100 part-time employees and about 625 event-specific staff at BC Place. Unionized roles at BC Place include skilled tradespersons and technicians, building security, conversions, event security, first aid, housekeeping and event hosting.

102nd GREY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN 2014 AWARDED TO VANCOUVER

VANCOUVER -- The Canadian Football League will cap what promises to be a banner year by staging the 2014 Grey Cup Championship Game and festival here in Vancouver, it was announced today.

“We’re thrilled and proud to award the 102nd Grey Cup Championship Game to the city of Vancouver and the people of British Columbia,” said Commissioner Mark Cohon.

“Next year is shaping up as a real milestone for our league, with the return of Ottawa to the CFL, and the opening of a new stadium in Hamilton, on the heels of the momentum we plan to generate this year.

“And BC Place, one of our brightest and greatest stages, is an ideal place to cap a tremendous year.”

At a media conference here today, the league’s Chief Operating Officer announced the game will be played on Sunday, November 30th, 2014 and cited Vancouver’s excellent track record as a Grey Cup site.

“We know BC Place, one of the great venues in North America, will be packed: our last Grey Cup here sold out in July,” Michael Copeland said.

“And we know the economic impact will be huge: it was measured at $118 million in 2011, as 130,000 visitors poured into Vancouver. Most of all, we know the people here will be wonderful hosts.”

The province of British Columbia has pledged its support for the event.

“As Premier and a CFL fan, I’m very pleased to welcome the Grey Cup back to Vancouver,” said Premier Christy Clark.

“The Grey Cup isn’t just a game, but a week-long festival of Canadian football and culture. It’s an event that leaves its mark on the host city and all those Canadians who travel to be part of it. I know Vancouver will again play host to a tremendous Grey Cup.”

The BC Lions are thrilled to be bringing the Grey Cup back to Vancouver.

"The Lions are British Columbia's team and our success is a reflection of our loyal fans and the people of this great  province," said owner Senator David Braley. "They are the reason past Grey Cup festivals held in Vancouver were among the very best in our league’s history and they will make the 2014 Grey Cup Championship Game and festival another huge success.”

The 101st Grey Cup will be played this November 24th in Regina, Saskatchewan.
