Canada’s Women’s National Team to host Germany and Japan in Vancouver

Wednesday 5 February 2014, Vancouver (BC) – Canada’s Women’s National Team will host two of the world’s most dominant women’s soccer nations in Vancouver in 2014 when it plays Germany, Wednesday 18 June (kickoff 19.00 local) and Japan, Tuesday 28 October (kickoff 19.00 local). Both Women’s International Friendly matches will be played at BC Place.

“To ensure Canada’s Women’s National Team offers consistent, world-class performances, Canada Soccer believes that it must play against quality opponents more often, and play at home on a regular basis,” said Victor Montagliani, President of Canada Soccer. “Vancouver has demonstrated its enthusiasm towards the beautiful game and we are thrilled to bring some of the fiercest opponents international women’s soccer can offer so that our Women’s National Team can experience the support of their home fans again on the road to Canada 2015.”

Germany won its first 5 games (out of 10) in FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers from September to November 2013, looking poised to qualify for FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015TM. Canada has yet to beat Germany, but the last two results were close encounters decided by one goal differential.

Tickets for the June match between Canada and Germany will go on sale on Friday 21 February, and will be available starting at $20 (plus applicable fees). Single tickets for the October Canada-Japan clash will go on sale at a later date, but a two-match pack, featuring both the Germany and Japan matches will be on sale on 21 February starting at $36 (plus applicable fees).

In a continued effort to offer the soccer community affordable access to these matches, special group rates and discounted family packs will also be offered.

In addition, purchasers of tickets for the Canada’s Women’s National Team matches in Vancouver will be offered a special opportunity to opt-in to a Priority Access list to purchase venue packs for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015TM matches at BC Place when the packs go on sale.

All ticket and event details will be posted to canadasoccer.com as they become available.

These two matches, with the other two announced earlier in the week, form what will be a busy 2014 home schedule for Canada’s Women’s National Team. All Canada’s WNT home matches this year will be broadcast live nationally on Sportsnet.

Canada WNT 2014 Home Schedule

The largest convention in Vancouver's History announced for 2025

November 5, 2013

The General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous selects Vancouver for the
2025 International Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous

November 5, 2013. Vancouver, BC:  Vancouver will welcome 48,000 people from around the world for the 2025 International Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous. This will be the single largest meeting ever held in the city with a footprint spanning both the Vancouver Convention Centre and BC Place Stadium.

The news was announced on November 4 during the General Service Board Meeting at the A.A. General Service Office in New York. The International Convention will take place July 2 to 5, 2025.

Expected to contribute $71 million in direct spending to the local economy, the 2025 International Convention in Vancouver is the result of a 10-year journey involving the A.A. General Service Board and its General Service Office in New York, local A.A.s, Tourism Vancouver, the Vancouver Convention Centre, BC Place and local hotel partners. Vancouver bid for the first time in 2003, and attempted once more before securing the conference in 2013. More than a dozen North American cities were invited to bid for the highly coveted 2025 meeting, including Montreal, St. Louis, Minneapolis and Denver. Vancouver was selected for its award-winning facilities and infrastructure, close relationships among the hospitality community, and inspiring location next to the ocean and mountains.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, strength and hope to help themselves and each other recover from alcoholism. The organization’s international convention takes place once every five years, and is attended by delegates from more than 75 countries. The event features meetings, workshops and a traditional flag ceremony that celebrates the sobriety of members worldwide.

Quotes:

Gregg Talley, president and CEO of Talley Management Group, and A.A. convention manager

"Vancouver had all the basics covered: an amazing destination, world-class facilities and a committed, energized local A.A. population. The icing on the cake was the team of incredible hospitality professionals who worked together, and then with us, to make this happen. We are delighted to be working with the Vancouver community to make this event a huge success in 2025."

Carolyn W., B.C./Yukon Area 79 delegate
"It was my privilege to be the local A.A. representative for our bid to host the 2025 International Convention in Vancouver. The A.A. members of the B.C./Yukon Area sent me off to New York for the first presentation with loud and enthusiastic cheers of 'bring it home'. We were thrilled to learn we'll be welcoming A.A. members from all over the world in 2025. And good news travels fast: since the announcement was made, I've been contacted by A.A. members from Vancouver to Japan expressing their gratitude for the efforts of everyone involved to make this possible."

The Honourable Todd Stone, BC Transportation and Infrastructure Minister and Minister Responsible for PavCo

"This is a huge vote of confidence for British Columbia, demonstrating once again the importance of a strong economy and B.C.’s competitiveness on the international stage. This bid could not have been contemplated, let alone achieved, without the province’s two world-class facilities: the Vancouver Convention Centre and BC Place."

Jacqueline Benear, director of Sales, Meetings & Conventions, U.S., Tourism Vancouver
"We are truly honoured that A.A. has chosen Vancouver to host the 2025 International Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous. Orchestrating and winning a bid of this magnitude took time and patience, and is the direct result of A.A.'s local community approaching us in the mid-90s - they have been our steadfast inspiration ever since. The International Convention is a cornerstone booking for our city, and a testament to the entire hospitality community’s collaboration, dedication and long-term planning. This amazing event is so powerful and uplifting to so many people, and we look forward to sharing our home with A.A. in 2025."

Jonas Melin, chair, Hotel Association of Vancouver; first deputy chair, Tourism Vancouver; and general manager, Inn at False Creek-Quality Hotel Downtown

"The successful bid on a convention of this magnitude elevates Vancouver on the world stage and is a great example of all industry stakeholders working together for a common goal. Credit must go to the province of B.C., the Vancouver Convention Centre and BC Place Stadium, all of which contributed to this decision. This will be a pivotal event not only for Metro Vancouver, but also for the entire province as these visitors extend their trips and explore the rest of B.C."

Joann Pfeifer, general manager, Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel and chair, Vancouver Hotel Destination Association
"This successful bid is a tremendous example of the hotel community working together with our partners to bring an important convention to the city. The benefits of a group of this size will be felt throughout our entire hospitality industry, from hotels and taxi operators to retailers and restaurants. A.A. choosing to host their conference here absolutely validates Vancouver’s growing reputation as a world city."

The Maple Leaf Monster Jam® Tour and Kids Help Phone have joined forces for the first time ever

November 4, 2013

MONSTER JAM® AND KIDS HELP PHONE GEAR UP FOR NATIONAL INITIATIVE:
SHIFT GEARS. STAND UP. STOP BULLYING.

TORONTO, ON – November 4/13I am bullied. I don’t know why. I guess they do it for the fun of it. Anyway I have put up with it for 5 years and I’m tired of life.....”

In Canada, a child or teen is bullied every seven minutes on the playground, and 65% of young people in a Kids Help Phone survey say they have been bullied online. Bullying can have a tremendous effect on young people’s mental health and well-being, and those effects may stay with them for life.  By the time you finish reading this sentence, far too many young people in Canada will have been bullied physically, verbally, socially or online.

The Maple Leaf Monster Jam® Tour and Kids Help Phone have joined forces, for the first time ever, on a nationwide campaign to generate awareness about bullying in Canada and to empower young people to Shift Gears. Stand Up. Stop Bullying. The awareness campaign launches during Bullying Awareness Week, November 17-23, 2013, and encourages young people who have been bullied to seek help and those who have witnessed bullying to step in and do something to make it stop – or tell a trusted adult.

Did you know:

  • 1 in 5 middle school students report avoiding restrooms at school due to fear of being bullied. (Smokowski & Kopasz, 2005)
  • 87% of students in grades 8 to 10 reported witnessing school bullying in the past year. (Trach et al., 2010)
  • Bystanders can stop bullying:  Studies have shown that bullying stops within 10 seconds more than half of the time when a bystander intervenes. (Ahmed, 2008)

As part of this new initiative, a Monster Jam produced PSA will be unveiled online during Bullying Awareness Week featuring Canadian Monster Jam driver and former Monster Jam World FinalsSM Champion driver of Northern Nightmare, Cam McQueen. The PSA serves as a national call to action to help spread the word about Monster Jam and Kids Help Phone’s joint initiative to Shift Gears. Stand Up. Stop Bullying. The goal is to encourage kids to support each other, become more inclusive, embrace differences and stand up to help or tell a trusted adult when they see someone being bullied. The PSA will be available online at www.monsterjamcanada.ca and www.kidshelpphone.ca. Visitors who view the PSA will receive an exclusive 2 for 1 ticket offer for a limited time to any Maple Leaf Monster Jam show during the 2014 season.

In addition, a portion of every Maple Leaf Monster Jam tour ticket sold will be donated to Kids Help Phone. The Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour will generously donate 10,000 tickets to Kids Help Phone in support of their mission to prevent bullying.

As part of the campaign, bullying awareness events will be held in cities across Canada where Monster Jam shows will be held, starting in Toronto this January.  These week-of-show events will be attended by local youth and will include a Kids Help Phone bullying awareness presentation; an opportunity to take a bullying prevention pledge and sign a Monster Jam crush car with messages about bullying behaviours they would like to stop (e.g. “hitting,” “talking behind someone’s back,” “name calling,” “mean texts,”etc.); and the unique experience to have a front row seat to witness a Monster Jam truck crush the messaged car live on the spot!

“Monster Jam is revved up about our new partnership with Kids Help Phone in Canada. We are proud to lend our platform and resources to help put a spotlight on bullying, its negative effects and create a more inclusive mentality amongst our youth,” said Amy Dubinsky, Feld Motor Sports Regional VP of Event Marketing and Sales. “Bullying continues to be a growing problem and prevention is everyone’s responsibility. With Kids Help Phone’s expertise and our loyal Canadian Monster Jam fans, together we hope to raise the level of awareness and improve mental wellness within local communities across Canada.”

“We’re very excited about the partnership with Monster Jam to raise awareness about bullying and the actions young people can take to address it,” said Sharon Wood, President and CEO, Kids Help Phone. “This campaign tells young people that they themselves can lead the way when it comes to bullying, both in terms of speaking out to stop it or to get help, but also in terms of creating more inclusive environments where bullying can’t thrive, because everyone is welcome and their differences are respected. We’re grateful to Monster Jam for helping to bring this important message to kids and families right across Canada.”

The Shift Gears. Stand Up. Stop Bullying. campaign will also be supported by venue and media partners and social media channels throughout Canada.

The 2014 Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour will stop in the following cities and feature our special week-of-show event in each one (excluding Halifax):

Toronto, ON: January 18-19/14, Rogers Centre
Vancouver, BC:  February 1/14, BC Place
