Architecture and Design
BETTER THAN NEW.
BC Place is an icon of British Columbia. From the water, or from the sky, views of Vancouver’s downtown skyline are punctuated by the retractable stadium roof. BC Place is one of the most photographed landmarks in all of Western Canada – check out some of these examples on Flickr.
The revitalization of BC Place was overseen by lead architects, Stantec Architecture.
Stantec was initially brought onboard for Phase One renovation in 2008, to upgrade the public spaces within BC Place in preparation for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Shortly after starting the interior work, Stantec was tasked with reinventing BC Place. All options were investigated, however one solution made the most sense: Utilizing the sturdy foundations of the old BC Place. A revitalization of the stadium would also cost about half compared to brand new construction, and it eliminated tons of unnecessary landfill waste and CO2 emissions.
Working closely with Geiger Engineers, Stantec proposed an environmentally-friendly revitalization of the old BC Place. Stantec’s master plan allowed the new BC Place to be constructed within the project timeline, and within budget.
Geiger Engineers conceptualized a highly-engineered and innovative post-tensioned radial cable truss roof system to be built atop the reinforced concrete foundations of the existing stadium. The new roof overcame many challenges, including operational and climatic considerations of the retractable roof. Comprising of 36 masts (each 50m tall), 35km of cable, and a total of 18,000 tons of steel, the retractable roof is an incredible achievement in precision design and construction.
The replacement of the roof also involved new stadium lighting and sound systems, an artificial turf field, new seating, and a host of other aesthetic and operational upgrades. The end result is a new stadium, one that rivals the best in the world.
The remarkable revitalization of BC Place Stadium continues to receive awards and accolades since opening in 2011, including ‘Project of the Year’ at the prestigious Stadium Business Awards in May 2011 in Turin, Italy.
