November 27th, 2023

In homage to Sinclair’s final match representing Canada, BC Place will rename the stadium for the December 5th game vs. Australia

VANCOUVER, BC – BC Place, Vancouver's iconic sports and entertainment stadium, is set to make history, as it renames the venue for one special day on December 5th in honour of Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair. The stadium will be officially known as 'Christine Sinclair Place' for one unforgettable evening, celebrating her extraordinary career as the world’s leading goal scorer as she plays her final match representing Canada Soccer Women’s National Team against Australia.

Sinclair's illustrious career, spanning over two decades, has left a lasting mark on the world of soccer. Born and raised in Burnaby, Sinclair's journey from a local talent to a global icon has been a source of immense pride for the community. Since going international with her career, Sinclair has played nine matches at BC Place, including the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament Final vs. the United States, FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ Quarterfinal vs. England, and most recently, the Celebration Tour: Canada vs. Nigeria in 2022, where Sinclair’s world international goalscoring record was celebrated.

"Christine Sinclair is not just a national hero; she's a hometown hero,” said Chris May, General Manager at BC Place. “Growing up in Burnaby, her journey to international stardom resonates deeply with the local community. By renaming BC Place as 'Christine Sinclair Place' for her final match, we are also paying tribute to the profound impact she has had on her hometown and its aspiring athletes."

In addition to the renaming of the stadium for a day on December 5th, fans in attendance can expect to see several tributes paid to Sinclair throughout the evening both on and off the field. In collaboration with the stadium’s exclusive food and beverage provider, Sodexo Live!, BC Place will offer fans the opportunity to fuel up for the game as Sinclair would, with specialty menu items reflective of Sinclair’s favourite foods. Fans can also purchase the #12, a specialty cocktail available for one night only.

“Christine Sinclair has brought the world's attention to Canada and our great province and has showcased the incredible talent and spirit of our nation's athletes, both on and off the field,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport of British Columbia. “Her legacy will continue to inspire young women to lace up their cleats not only here at home, but worldwide. Renaming the stadium for one day is a fitting tribute to her extraordinary achievements”.

“The legacy of Christine’s career has and will live on beyond her tremendous accomplishments on the field. The renaming of BC Place for her final match is a fitting tribute given her west coast roots and the iconic moments at the venue where we have celebrated together as a nation,” added Charmaine Crooks, President of Canada Soccer.

The December 5th match between Canada Soccer and Australia promises to be an emotional and unforgettable moment for soccer fans and Canadians alike. On matchday, Vancouverites across town will witness ‘Christine Sinclair Place’ illuminate in red and white with the number 12.

The festivities will continue the following evening, December 6th, when BC Place proudly hosts an exclusive retirement party, raising a toast to Sinclair’s extraordinary career. Net proceeds from the evening’s party, which is presented by CIBC, will go to the newly established Christine Sinclair Foundation dedicated to empowering Girls With Goals. Hosted by TV broadcaster Kate Beirness, the event includes dinner and drinks, interactive activity stations, commemorative apparel, a fireside chat with Sinclair and former teammate Stephanie Labbé, and a performance by JUNO Award-winning musician Dallas Smith. Doors open at 7pm. For more information on purchasing tickets or to reserve a table, please contact ticketing@ttgcanada.com.
